A cycle in southern Brazil caused the displacement of more than 2,000 people this weekend. In total, 3,713 people were left with damaged houses and 697 were evicted from areas at risk due to the passage of the storm between Thursday and Friday. Caraá, a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is one of the most affected areas.

“The situation in Caraá worries us deeply,” said Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande do Sul, where there are 11 deaths and 10 people still missing. . “It is critical that we can, in an integrated way, quickly map the main affected areas and identify the people who need support.”

A four-month-old baby is among the dead, according to Brazilian media, which also showed images of a vehicle being dragged to a cemetery by strong winds.

“The water was already waist high in the house. Thank God the firefighters arrived quickly and rescued us by boat. It seemed like a nightmare,” said one of the victims rescued in Sao Leopoldo, a city half an hour from Porto Alegre, quoted by the Estadao newspaper. Other inhabitants were evacuated by helicopter.

No more rains are expected in this area of ​​Brazil as of this Sunday, reported R.F.I. Humanitarian aid to support the numerous victims and the search for the disappeared will continue for the next few days, according to a statement from the Rio Grande do Sul government.
