“Let’s stop the 320-meter tower in San Rafael” Its title is the petition published on the change.org site and whose objective is to prevent the construction of one of the buildings that is part of the project of the Italian businessman Giuseppe Cipriani, on the property of the former San Rafael hotel in Punta del Este.
The petition argues that the Esteño spa “does not deserve to enter a high-level competition.” “Who cares about having the tallest tower in Latin America with the environmental impact that this means in an area where the most beautiful houses in the resort are located?
He adds that this outrage cannot be “allowed” because “it will be the beginning as the existing towers were, but in an absurd and unknown dimension for lovers of Punta del Este.”
At another point he mentions that if “the firefighters have no way of protecting” the 20-story towers “how do they intend to do it with a tower of more than 100 floors.”
“The sanitation systems, the impact of traffic, the saturation of the beaches and the shadow that a tower with that height will produce are some of the impacts that must be taken care of”; adds.
The Departmental Board authorized a higher exception than initially requested so that one of the buildings –it will be the furthest from the boulevard– reach 320 meters high.
If completed, it would be the highest south of the Rio Grande, which acts as the natural border between Mexico and the United States. Today the Obispado tower in the Federal District of Mexico reaches 305 meters in height and the Great Santiago Tower in the capital of Chile at 300 meters in height, Diario Correo of Punta del Este had reported days ago.
The petition is promoted by Carlos Crispo, a resident of that residential area of Maldonado, FM Gente reported on Sunday. This Monday it had around 1,830 signatures. The Maldonado mayor authorized the Cipriani Group to begin work on the San Rafael hotel last week.
