En Puerto Plata, Ciénaga y Laguna siguen inundadas

Two weeks after they began downpours fall that have affected this Atlantic region, dozens of families are still prevented from leaving their homes, because the homes are flooded.

These are residents in the La Ciénaga and La Laguna sectors, in the Cabarete tourist district, in the Sosúa municipality, where around 1,300 houses are affectedas revealed by the mayor of the Fire Department, Danny Zarzuela.

He expressed that this situation keeps families in suspense, indicating that, “if new rains occur, we fear that something worse will happen.”

Zarzuela maintained that in La Ciénega residents around 4,500 peoplewhile, in La Laguna, there are more than 300 houses.

He added that Public Works sent a crane on Wednesday to try to drain the waters, but to no avail because the streams are linked underground.

He quantified that at least 10 thousand families are suffering from the consequences left by the rains on the coast of Cabarete and that they have received assistance from the Government, through the Social Plan of the Presidency, the Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) and the ministries. of the Presidency, Public Health and Public Works.

The district director, Freddy Cruz, He maintained that he has remained vigilant, given the possibility that new rains may occur and that it is necessary to help vulnerable families in the aforementioned territories.

Cruz stated that since the beginning of last week, when it began to rain heavily in Cabarete, it was necessary to take families out of their homes and lodge them in the homes of relatives and friends who reside in safe areas.

The narrow streets that both neighborhoods have are flooded by water, so when residents try to leave their homes, they must do so in boats, whose owners do not charge them for the service, in solidarity with the community. He indicated that they only accept a contribution if it comes from someone who wants to do it out of gratitude, explained Angel Luis, one of the young people who provides service to those affected.

On your side, Ramona Franciscowho has been residing in La Ciénaga for more than 20 years, said that the floods destroyed his home, but that he has survived due to social aid from the Government.

Meanwhile, Manuel Peralta, head of the family and with three minor children, said that he hopes that the ruling party will continue to help him, because “it was not easy to spend Christmas Eve with my family, having dinner standing up and with water in the waist, because our house is under water.” He resides in the La Laguna neighborhood of Cabarete.

While, the community Maria Hernandez He showed spiritual faith, when talking with journalists about the situation that is happening due to the rain. He considered that in Cabarete, “we must accept what God has sent us through the rains and nature, because in the end we will connect divine blessings in abundance.”

Other people said they fear the consequences of stagnant water, because it could cause illness to residents.
