The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stressed the separation of powers and said that no one is above the lawin a national radio and television chain pronouncement. In a five -minute speech, the President said he will respond with diplomacy and multilateralism to Donald Trump’s government threats to impose a 50% rate on Brazilian products in the United States, which classified as “unacceptable blackmail”.
Without directly quoting former President Jair Bolsonaro, whose trial was quoted in Trump’s recent letters to justify the tariff, Lula said institutions act to protect society from the threat from hate and anti-vise speeches spread by digital networks.
“In Brazil, no one – no one – is above the law. It is necessary to protect Brazilian families from individuals and organizations that use digital networks to promote scams and fraud, commit a crime of racism, encourage violence against women and attack democracy, as well as feed hatred, violence and bullying, in some cases leading to death, and discrediting long -time vaccines.” declared the president.
Highlighting the independence of the judiciary, the president said he cannot interfere with decisions of other powers.
“We have an independent judiciary. In Brazil, we respect due process of law, the principles of presumption of innocence, contradictory and broad defense. Trying to interfere with Brazilian justice is a serious attack on national sovereignty,” he added.
“Unacceptable blackmail”
Lula stressed that Brazil has always been open to dialogue and has been trying to negotiate with the United States since May, when Donald Trump government imposed a 10% tariff on Brazilian products. THE President classified as “blackmail” the use of false economic information to justify the threats of the US government.
“We had more than 10 meetings with the United States government, and sent a negotiation proposal. We expected an answer, and what came was an unacceptable blackmail, in the form of threats to Brazilian institutions, and with false information about trade between Brazil and the United States,” he said.
He stated that the government is meeting with representatives of the productive, civil society and unions to try to negotiate with the United States. According to Lula, this is a great action that various segments of the economy, such as industry, commerce, the service sector, the agricultural sector and the workers.
Lula pointed out that Brazil will respond to Trump government attacks through diplomacy, commerce and multilateralism. “We are together in defense of Brazil. And we will do it with our heads up, following the example of each Brazilian and every Brazilian who wakes up early, and goes to the fight to work, take care of his family and help Brazil grow. We will continue to bet on good diplomatic and commercial relations, not only with the United States, but with all the countries of the world,” he added.
Lula recalled that in two and a half years of government, Brazil opened 379 new markets for Brazilian products abroad. Reaffirmed that the government can use all legal instruments to defend the economy, as resources to the World Trade Organization until the Reciprocity Law, approved by the National Congress.
“Traitors of the Fatherland”
The president expressed indignation for the support of some political groups to the Trump government’s tariff attack.
“My indignation is even greater to know that this attack on Brazil has the support of some Brazilian politicians. They are true traitors of the country. They bet the worse, better. They do not care about the economy of the country and the damage caused to our people,” he said.
Big Techs
The president added that the supervision of foreign digital platforms, one of the items cited by Trump to justify the imposition of the tariff, aims to defend national sovereignty. He stressed that all companies that operate in Brazil are required to comply with Brazilian law.
“The defense of our sovereignty also applies to the performance of foreign digital platforms in Brazil. To operate in our country, all national and foreign companies are required to comply with the rules,” he said.
Pix
On Trump’s government complaints to Pix, Lula said the government will not accept attacks on the instant transfer system, which he classified as a country’s heritage.
“Pix is from Brazil. We will not accept attacks on Pix, which is a heritage of our people. We have one of the most advanced payment systems in the world, and we will protect it,” he said.
Numbers
The president presented numbers to deny the US government’s allegations about alleged unfair business practices by Brazil.
“The first victim of a world without rules is the truth. The allegations of Brazilian unfair business practices are false. The United States has accumulated, for over 15 years, a robust commercial surplus of $ 410 billion [com o Brasil]”He said.
Regarding deforestation, used in Trump’s allegations to threaten the country, Lula recalled that Brazil is currently a world reference in the defense of the environment. “In two years, we have been halved the deforestation of the Amazon. And we are working to zero deforestation by 2030,” he said.
“There are no winners in tariff wars. We are a country of peace without enemies. We believe in multilateralism and cooperation between nations. But no one forgets: Brazil has a single owner: the Brazilian people,” Lula concluded when he finishes the statement.
