Tomorrow, November 20, marks the World Day in Remembrance of the Victims of Traffic Accidents, so this Saturday the Movement of Victims of Road Violence of Panama, held a walk in Parque Omar to remember this date.

Toribio Diaz, spokesperson for this movement, stated that the objective of this activity is to be able to make a call to society in general to raise awareness about respect for traffic regulations. It also stands out that every year a large number of people die from traffic accidents, and the most worrying thing is that they are the main cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 29. It is intended to reduce this fatal statistic because most traffic accidents are preventable.

On October 26, 2005 the General Assembly of the United Nations in Resolution 60/5 “invites Member States and the international community to recognize the third Sunday of November of each year as World day in remembrance of the victims of traffic accidentsin honor of the victims of traffic accidents and their families.

Traffic accidents, the leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 29, according to a WHO report for the year 2018.

Around 1.25 million people die each year as a result of traffic accidents, according to the 2015 Global Safety Situation Report. In addition, 90% of those killed are in low- and middle-income countries, which they only have 54% of the registered vehicles. These accidents are the leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 29. Nearly half of all fatalities are pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, as noted in this who report.

But these human, economic, social and health losses can be avoided. There is data that confirms that injuries caused by traffic accidents can be prevented, said the Traffic Director Carlos Ordoñez.

Statistical data of the Transit and Land Transportation Authority and the Transit Operations Directorate of the National Police to date goes 271 victims in 320 days of this year 2022, due to traffic accidents.

The most recurring causes where a violation is committed are excessive speed, run overs, disregarding signs and breathalyzer.

Experience from around the world indicates that the creation of an adequately funded lead agency for road safety and an accurate assessment of a country’s road safety conditions are important steps in trying to effectively address the problem. of the injuries.

Different factors have been identified that increase the risk of injuries, such as inappropriate or excessive speed, failure to use seat belts and child restraints, driving while intoxicated, failure to use protective helmets for part of the drivers of two-wheeled vehicles, a poorly designed or insufficiently maintained road infrastructure and old vehicles, poorly maintained or that do not have safety devices. Regulations and other measures imposed to deal with these risk factors have led to a drastic decrease in traffic accidents in many countries.

Emergency trauma care services have also been shown to be important in mitigating damage from road accidents, noted the expert in emergency management and first aid Hector Soriano.
