Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced that it has taken the painful decision
to stop its activities in Ukraine due to the war with Russia, although it will do everything possible to guarantee some continuity
in the care of their patients.
In a statement, the organization said its teams in the beleaguered country are deeply concerned about the consequences of the conflict for the Ukrainian people and communities. We see on the roads that tens of thousands of people are scared and on the move
.
Stopped activities included treating HIV cases in Severodonetsk, tuberculosis in Zhytomyr, and improving access to medical services in Donietsk in eastern Ukraine.
These services, MSF emphasized, are much needed for the medical care of communities affected by the conflict. For that reason, Although these programs have mostly been discontinued, we did our best to ensure some continuity of care for our patients.
.
The humanitarian organization indicated that in Ukraine Needs were already high, as people have lived through more than seven years of conflict, and we are concerned about the impact that prolonged fighting could have on patients, many of whom are elderly and suffer from chronic illnesses
.
Before the current escalation in tensions, he said, “we contacted several hospitals in the oblasts Donietsk and Lugansk to provide training in emergency medicine and surgical preparation, and yesterday our team delivered a kits for mass casualty care to a hospital in Mariupol. As hostilities continue, ensuring people’s access to healthcare and medicine will be critical.”
