On October 19, Colombia will live an election day designed for young people. That day, who are between 14 and 28 years old may choose their representatives in the local and municipal youth councils, a space created so that the youth voice has an impact on decisions that affect their daily lives and their opportunities in the future.
Unlike the councilors, these counselors do not have legislative functions, but they do fulfill an essential role: they represent their communities, they present proposals, promote participation and monitor that public youth policies really respond to their needs.
What are the youth advice?
Youth Councils are autonomous scenarios of citizen participation. There, young people act as a bridge between their generation and local or national authorities, making development plans and public policies include their priorities.
Your work goes from designing projects to strengthen education, culture or employment, to submitting management reports before the community. They also have the responsibility of exercising oversight, that is, monitoring that entities fulfill what is promised in youth.
What are your functions?
Among the main tasks of the youth advice are:
- Propose policies and programs aimed at young people.
- Participate in the construction of municipal, departmental and national youth agendas.
- Exercise social control to development plans.
- Promote youth organization and participation in each territory.
- Defend and disseminate the rights and duties of youth.
In this way, they become a real space of incidence where young people can go from complaint to action.
How do you choose the directors?
The election will be organized by the National Registry and will be held by secret vote. Candidates can occur through political parties, youth processes or independently.
All young people between 14 and 28 who are registered in the electoral census of their municipality or town can vote. The invitation is to participate, since their decision will depend who will represent them in the coming years.
On October 19 it will then be a historical opportunity: young people will not only have the possibility of raising their voice, but to decide how they want the present and future of Colombia to be built.
