With 57.2% of valid votes, Rodrigo Neves (PDT) was elected this Sunday (27) for a new term as mayor of Niterói. He has held the position for eight years, between 2013 and 2020.
In addition to marking his return for a third mandate, the election also confirms the hegemony of his political group in the city. The current mayor Axel Grael is also from the PDT and had been Rodrigo Neves’ deputy the other two times he held the post. This time, the ticket included Isabel Swan (PV) as a candidate for vice-mayor.
In the second round, Rodrigo Neves defeated Bolsonaro federal deputy Carlos Jordy (PL). He obtained 42.8% of the valid votes.
Niterói is the fifth largest electoral college in the state. 134 voting locations with 1,485 ballot boxes were made available. According to the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ), 410,032 people were able to participate in the electoral process. Of these, 289,797 went to the polls.
The second round of municipal elections takes place in cities with more than 200 thousand inhabitants in which the winner of the first round did not reach 50% plus one of the total valid votes. Although 11 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro could have this scenario, it only occurred in Niterói and Petrópolis. In the state capital, for the first time since 2008, the election was decided in the first round, with the re-election of Eduardo Paes (PSD) with 60.47% of the valid votes.
