The president of the Cuban National Assembly, Esteban Lazo Hernández, today in Moscow condemned the Western sanctions against Russia and assured that the conflict in Ukraine was caused by the approach of the military structures of the United States and NATO to the Russian borders.
“Cuba warned that the conflict in Ukraine could have been avoided if the United States and NATO had not moved closer to the borders of the Russian Federation and if a military doctrine of an increasingly offensive nature had not been imposed in that alliance,” Lazo Hernández said in a intervention in the Russian Senate.
The president of the Cuban Legislature stressed that for decades the legitimate and well-founded demands of Russia for security guarantees were dismissed.
He condemned the “unilateral sanctions adopted against the Russian Federation by the governments of the West, in general, and the United States, in particular”
Lazo Hernández stressed that Cuba advocates a negotiated solution to the conflict in Ukraine that “takes into account the interests of all parties, including those of the Russian Federation.”
He thanked the senators and Russia for their support and solidarity in the face of the “criminal policy” of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States more than 60 years ago.
“We consider it essential that Russian companies actively participate in investment projects in Cuba, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by Law No. 118 on foreign investment,” said the president of the National Assembly.
He also called on the Russian federated entities to participate in Cuba’s national plan for economic and social development until the year 2030.
In addition, Lazo Hernández pointed out the need to continue strengthening contacts between the legislatures of the two countries and expressed the willingness of the Cuban side to hold what would be the first Russian-Cuban interparliamentary meeting.
This visit is part of a tour that will also include Belarus and Türkiye.
