According to figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in Mexico, 54 percent of LGBT+ people of school age have suffered harassment or violence in the classroom.

In addition, 83 percent have suffered a negative comment about their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and 55 percent feel insecure in their study centers. It’s all about numbers worryingexplained Kristian Hölge, UNODC representative in the country.

During a conversation led by this agency, he pointed out that more than half of the young people consulted reported that their parents directly tried to change their sexual orientation during adolescence at home or by taking them to therapists and religious leaders to try to change their identity.

One of the great problems that children face are the so-called efforts to correct sexual orientation and gender identity (Ecosig), which, he said, erode self-esteem. Because of that, young people are three times more likely to commit suicide.
