Several hectares of Frailejón were burned in the Tota protected area, an environmental tragedy, in a wasteland!
Colombia News.
In the Tota páramo, in Boyacá, Frailejón Ernesto Pérez ‘lost’ part of his family, thousands of plants were burned in a fire that lasted more than three days and was difficult to control due to the wind and the characteristics of the land.
A frailejón grows a maximum of 2 centimeters per year, which was lost in the Tota, “is a true tragedy,” warn environmentalists.
Why? They produce water, take care of water sources. In Colombia, there are moors full of frailejones.
This is precisely the World Water Week.
In the Tota páramo in the municipality of Aquitania, at least 60% of the native vegetation has been affected.
There is talk of 18 hectares burned, there is no clear data yet on how many are frailejones.
Several hours later the emergency was brought under control. “The fire department of Aquitania attended and liquidated on March 22 the forest fire in the Tota – Bijagual – Mamapacha moor complex. With the National Environmental System we will be attentive to the restoration processes of this important ecosystem”, informed Parques Nacionales.
What happened? It is not clear how the fire started, or who could have caused it.
