According to the Government, calm has returned to the ‘Litoral Penitentiary’ after the massacre of November 12 and 13, which left 68 dead and 25 wounded.
The situation ‘is under control’ in the ‘Litoral Penitentiary‘, where between Friday night and Saturday morning (November 12 and 13, 2021) occurred a slaughter in which 68 inmates died, informed the Government spokesman, Carlos Jijón.
“Right now, the situation is under control throughout the ‘Penitentiary‘”Jijón said at a press conference in the city of Guayaquil, hours after reporting new” attacks “among inmates.
He pointed out that 900 police officers participated in the control operations, while the military maintained controls on the outskirts of the prison.
The “attacks” on Saturday afternoon took place hours after the death of 68 prisoners in a confrontation within the ‘Penitentiary‘, where last September the worst slaughter prison in the country, which resulted in 119 deceased prisoners.
The latest events bring to 316 the deaths that have occurred in Ecuadorian prisons so far in 2021, in events that occurred in clashes between inmates and deaths attributed to suicides.
This year has been the most violent in recent Ecuadorian prison history and, so far, eight incidents of magnitude have been reported. The first occurred on February 23, when the death of 79 prisoners during riots registered in the own ‘Penitentiary‘and in the prisons of’ Turi ‘(Azuay) and’ Latacunga ‘(Cotopaxi).
On April 28, a shooting killed five inmates of the ‘Litoral Penitentiary‘. On July 21, new riots in the ‘Penitentiary‘and in the’ Latacunga Prison ‘they ended up with 27 dead and a police officer sexually abused.
While on August 12, six inmates of the Quevedo prison died as a result of clashes. But the worst happened again in the ‘Penitentiary‘On September 28, when, as a result of clashes with firearms, 119 inmates died.
In October, 11 prisoners were found hanging in visiting cells, events that were classified as suicides. This week, on November 9 and 10, an inmate died in the ‘Litoral Penitentiary‘as a consequence of several clashes. And, finally, between November 12 and 13, 68 more inmates died as a result of fights.
