The non-governmental organization Utopix demands that the State take urgent action in the face of the increase in femicides and act against impunity, which it says most of the time protects the aggressors
The NGO Utopix recorded 20 femicides last July in the country, bringing the figure to 131 cases so far this year. In addition, the report affirms that there were ten frustrated femicides and seven femicides of Venezuelan women abroad; specifically in Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Panama and Ecuador.
“We continue to warn and see with concern that there is no concrete proposal from the State to deal with this problem, which only shows the great shortcoming that exists around public policies related to the prevention, attention and mitigation of gender violence against women. women”, maintains Utopix, while demanding that the State take urgent action in the face of the increase in violence and act against impunity, which they say most of the time protects the aggressors.
The state with the highest number of femicides during the month of July was Miranda with six cases, followed by Anzoátegui, Falcón, Aragua and the Capital District with two cases in each state; and the states of Portuguesa, Bolívar, Carabobo, Sucre, Zulia and Barinas with one case each.
Most of the victims were between 16 and 45 years old, the organization’s report says, and the age of one of the victims could not be determined. 11 of the victims were mothers, so a total of 15 children, children and adolescents were orphaned. In the total of 20 femicides, in seven cases the relatives reported mistreatment, one of the victims had a disability and in two cases there was a history of harassment.
In eight cases, the femicides used firearms, in four white weapons, in three the cause of death was due to blows, two cases due to mechanical asphyxiation, one case due to gynecological violence and in two the cause of death is unknown, details Utopix .
Of the 22 aggressors implicated in the events of July, the NGO indicates that ten are in prison, six are on the run, two of them committed suicide and there is no information on the other four.
According to the calculations of this NGO, in 2022 a femicide has been committed every 39 hours. Last year the average was one every 36 hours.
