Prosecutor Carlos Negro questioned the argument of Fagundez, who had described the portfolio as one of the “most fascist of the dictatorial regime.”
After the president of the Association of Criminal Lawyers of Uruguay, Juan Fagúndez, published this Wednesday on his Twitter account a series of arguments that oppose the creation of a Ministry of Justice,
one of the 15 measures proposed to the political parties by the Government, the prosecutor Carlos Negro came to the crossroads.
The ministry is contemplated in the document that the coordinator of Targeted Strategies for Police Crime Prevention, Diego Sanjurjo, delivered this week at the multi-party meeting.
Among other things, Fagúndez asked that they “be serious” and assured that this portfolio was one of the “most fascist of the dictatorial regime” in Uruguay.
On the contrary, Negro agreed with the initiative discussed by the interparty commission of security experts, and tweeted: “We continue to think that these are the SERIOUS debates that those of us linked to criminal justice owe ourselves. The consensus gathered in the document presented by the MI [Ministerio del Interior] days ago it is one of the most serious works that have been elaborated from the political point of view in terms of security”.
As for the reference that Fagúndez made about the dictatorial regime and the role of this ministry, Negro said that “all the agencies and powers of the State were intervened by the de facto power and not only the MJ [Ministerio de Justicia]”.
“It is not very serious to argue from there against the creation of a portfolio, which, by the way, was not a military invention any more than the bridges over the Uruguay River or the Salto Grande dam were. They only used the ideas of ‘bridges’, ‘dams’ and ‘ministry’. No lawyer could think that the countries with MJ (all) are not democratic or do not have separation of powers. For all this, let’s debate seriously leaving prejudices aside.
