Santiago. The deep injuries to his body and respiratory tract keep the son of the mayor of the municipality of El Valle, Hato Mayor province, affected by a tank explosion together with his parents, in a state of extreme care.
The six-year-old boy has been confined since the night of August 30 in the Burn Unit of the Arturo Grullón Children’s Hospital, where he was referred from the Robert Reid, where he was taken after being hit by the explosion along with his father, the mayor José Peguero, and his mother Yojani Marte, who recently passed away from injuries sustained during the accident.
Dr. Renata Quintana, director of the Burns Unit, reported that the child has a significant extension of his body surface burned, and that the injuries are deep.
“He is a patient who is in a situation of extreme care due to the extent of the injuries, because he also has injuries to the respiratory tract due to smoke and heat, his prognosis is reserved,” Quintana reported.
Regarding the recovery of the child, the doctor said that it is not something they can talk about, since each patient responds in a different way, especially burn patients, since it will depend not only on the treatment that is being given, but of the response of the organism of each individual. “These are deep injuries and he is a young child who still has many response systems in the body that are not mature enough, so the response from day to day is that he is going to tell us,” she said.
The doctor reported that the child is being cared for by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team that manages all patients, such as pediatricians, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nutritionists, intensivists, and the psychology area as well.
Mayor José Peguero, father of the child, is also admitted to an adult burn unit in Santo Domingo.
