Mexico City, Mexico-.Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in Cuba and in many homes they will not have a way to celebrate it. Cuban mothers are living in a desperate situation, in the midst of a deepening crisis. The shortage of food, medicine and money is scandalous on the island and seems like a road with no visible return.
At the head of many homes and responsible for putting a plate of food on the table for their children and other family members in their care, they are continually reinventing themselves and looking for new ways to survive. They are tired women, asking that the electricity not be taken away so that they can cook because the gas has been lacking for months.
we have seen mothers selling their hair to buy food for their children. Others have created a community on Facebook where they share simple recipes on how to cook chicken in 100 different ways or how to turn bodega hash into something you can swallow. There are mothers who, with the little they have, respond to the call of others who have less and donate the clothes that their children no longer wear. They know that today you cannot choose between eating and dressing. It is not enough for both.
On such a special day there will be mothers who cannot buy a cake as they traditionally did. Others will give their children the only protein in the refrigerator, and when they ask, they will only say: “Eat, I don’t like it, or I’m not hungry.” More than celebrating, these mothers must deal with an incessant anguish and an uncertainty that does not give them rest.
While the Cuban regime continues to demand a resistance that they do not suffer, the mothers face a reality where if you go to a hospital there are no medicines to heal you, the ambulance does not arrive, a bag of milk is half your salary and a egg carton exceeds 1600 pesos. This is how their days go by between deficiencies and empty spaces, from those who left to help them resist.
