More than half of the residents of the city of Embu-Guaçu, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, still suffer from a lack of energy caused by heavy rains and also by strong winds caused by the passage of an extratropical cyclone through the state of São Paulo. On Saturday afternoon, Enel, the company responsible for supplying electricity in Greater São Paulo, reported that 61% of Embu-Guaçu residents were still without electricity. In Embu-Guaçu, SP, blackout leaves 61% of residents without electricity

Last Wednesday (10), all of the city’s approximately 67,000 residents were left without power, according to information from the concessionaire itself. But yesterday, part of the power had been restored in the city and the company indicated that only 17% of customers were still without power. Today, however, this number has grown again, making the city of Embu-Guaçu the most affected by the supply problem in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

Enel was approached by Brazil Agency to explain why the number of customers without electricity increased again in Embu-Guaçu. In a note, the company clarified that the number of people affected in the city increased because it was necessary to disconnect the network for repairs.

“Enel Distribuição São Paulo clarifies that due to repairs to ensure the safety of teams during execution, in some cases it is necessary to disconnect the network for reconstruction”, says the company’s note.

In a statement published on its social networks last Thursday (11), the city council complained about the concessionaire and said it had notified the company and demanded “immediate responses”.

“Embu-Guaçu is currently experiencing an unacceptable situation. After the strong winds of December 10th, 78.16% of homes in our municipality remain without electricity. This affects families, businesses, essential services and, mainly, people who depend on equipment to survive”, wrote the city hall, on Instagram.

“We want clear technical explanations about what happened, an action plan with deadlines, teams and responsibilities and a complete update of the affected neighborhoods. It is not reasonable, it is not justifiable and we will not accept the delay in reestablishing an essential service. Electricity is not a favor, it is the concessionaire’s contractual obligation, guaranteed by law”, says the note from the municipal administration.
