Owners and tenants of the residential complex Eastern Granada, In Santo Domingo Este, they report that they have not received drinking water for more than two months, due to the poor work carried out by the project’s construction company.
Residents of the area report that about a year and a half ago, some of their neighbors had skin diseases, so they started an investigation process against the companies. Vestalia and Corinsain charge of the work.
The results showed significant damage to the interior of the tank, including water seepage from the back, sediment and debris inside the tank.
This led to them being sued before Proconsumidor at the beginning of the year, and they were successful in their case and received a ruling, forcing the construction company to intervene in the place before July 31, something that has not happened, since they send some workers only once or twice a week.
“We filed a complaint with Proconsumidor because the cistern was faulty and the water was dirty, which caused allergies and other illnesses in some of the residents. We won the lawsuit, they were given a month and to date they have not finished the work they need to do,” says Alexander Jimenez, owner of one of the apartments.
Despite the decision of the supervisory body, the work has not been completed, forcing residents to buy water trucks at RD$1,600 pesos every three or four days to be able to supply themselves.
“Imagine a housewife who has nothing to wash dishes with, nothing to bathe with or nothing to do around the house. The situation is not easy at all, because the construction company has refused to supply us with water, which should be the right thing to do because this situation is their fault,” says Anibal Henriquez, president of the residents’ association.
Some have decided to move until the situation is resolved, while others have complained that they have to take their clothes to relatives to be washed.
“We have water trucks, sometimes they hand us a hose or we go to a pump that is close to us, we have to go and wash at a relative’s place for the same reason,” says Alejandra, a resident of Eastern Granada.
Managers in Granada Oriental demand that these works be completed quickly and with the required quality, to prevent the health of their tenants from being affected again, and they hold these construction companies responsible for the damage caused.
