In DR with Demori, Marina Rossi talks about deforestation and livestock farming

The attraction will air this Tuesday (23), at 11 pm, on TV Brasil.

Rossi is also the author of the report book The siege: the Amazon invaded by cattle. In the work, the journalist reveals how livestock farming has illegally occupied vast areas of the largest tropical forest on the planet.

One of the aspects covered in the conversation with Leandro Demori is the so-called ‘ox washing’ or ‘triangulation’.

“The ox is born or grows up on a farm that has environmental liabilities – so, in theory, it could not produce meat. But before being sold to the slaughterhouse, the ox goes to a ‘clean’ type farm and that becomes its origin. In other words, it is not recorded that the ox came from a ‘dirty’ farm”, comments Rossi.

In the interview, the journalist reflects on the importance of knowing the origin of the meat that goes on Brazilians’ plates and explains the attempts to implement tracking systems capable of guaranteeing transparency in the production chain.

“The Brazilian government launched a national traceability plan at the end of last year, which is a grand and ambitious plan to know where that calf was born and all the places it passed before arriving at the slaughterhouse (…) Traceability is a path”, he explains.

When commenting on the scientific evidence on the climate impact of cattle, the interviewee says that the problem is not just the direct emission of gases by animals, in the chain associated with the expansion of livestock farming.

“Oxen are still a big emitter. But it’s not just them that emit. The oxen are there in the middle of deforestation and deforestation emits a lot of gas (…) It’s a whole line of gas emissions: oxen emitting gases, forest reduction, burning happening (…) If we had oxen free from deforestation, perhaps the emissions would be lower”, he highlights.
