In Cuba, Christmas fairs do not bring sales this year

An agricultural fair held this Saturday in the Havana neighborhood of Cayo Hueso, in Havana, left customers more frustrated than satisfied. Food prices, which were being sold as a supposed end-of-year sale, were actually the same high prices that are seen any day in the markets of the Cuban capital.

Shoppers were approaching this morning at a brisk pace, seeing beans, onions, vegetables and even missing pork on display. But as they read the tablet mostly filled with three-digit figures, they sped away from the points of sale located on the corner of Infanta and San Lázaro.

“How much is the onion?”, Asked a woman to the vendor who was taking out the strings of a almond and arranged them on the sidewalk before the curious gaze of those who had gathered nearby. “These white ones are worth 700 pesos,” replied the man, a response that caused a nervous laugh from the client who immediately turned around and left.

A few meters from a “Happy New Year” sign, written in chalk on a blackboard, pork was offered at a cost of 195 pesos per pound.

A few meters from a “Happy New Year” sign, written in chalk on a blackboard, pork was offered at a cost of 195 pesos per pound, but the cuts had more skin and bones than the longed-for fiber. “What did they raise those pigs with?” Asked a neighbor on Jovellar Street, a question that provoked ridicule about the feed, the stress suffered by the animal and the few chicharrones that can be eaten at Christmas celebrations.

After making accounts and analyzing the poor quality of the pieces of loin, shoulder and some ribs, the man decided to return home with an empty bag. “I will eat mincemeat on December 24 and chicken on December 31, but I am not going to pay this for the meat. It is an abuse,” he said.

On other occasions, although the park fairs have not satisfied the residents either, there has been no lack of praise in the accounts of official officials. “For Havana the greatest thing”, they repeat in their messages. “Satisfaction with the offer,” they add, some phrases that disappointed customers know will also be published this time.
