Family planning in Colombia has taken a significant turn in recent years, with men taking a more active and conscious role in contraception. Since 2021, More than 65,000 men have opted for vasectomies, a simple, safe and effective surgical procedure that represents a firm commitment to co-responsibility in sexual and reproductive health.

Within the framework of the “Have Them Right” campaign, Profamilia has focused on strengthening this cultural change, encouraging men to get involved in building equitable and responsible relationships.
According to the organization’s data, so far in 2024, More than 18,000 vasectomies have been performed, of which 52% correspond to young men between 18 and 35 years oldfollowed by 36% of men between 35 and 45 years old, and 10.47% over 46 years old.

In regional terms, Antioquia and Santanderes stand out as the departments with the highest number of procedures performed in 2024, with a total of 10,589 vasectomies. In the Central region, with 3,689 procedures, Bogotá tops the list (2,404), followed by Tunja (345) and Ibagué (342).
In the Western region, 2,890 procedures have been registered, with Cali leading 75% of the interventions carried out. For its part, in the Northern region, 1,158 vasectomies have been performed, with Cartagena, Barranquilla and Montería being the cities where the most men have opted for this method of contraception.

The vasectomy, 99% effective, does not affect sexual performancewhich makes it a safe and definitive option for men who want to make autonomous decisions about their life project. Diana Torres, a urologist at Profamilia, emphasizes the social impact of this increase in procedures.

With more than 54 years of experience, Profamilia has performed more than 500,000 vasectomies nationwide, consolidating itself as a leader in the provision of sexual and reproductive health services.
