In Caquetá, a social leader who supported the JEP in the search for disappeared people was assassinated

En Caquetá fue asesinado líder social que apoyó a la JEP en la búsqueda de personas desparecidas

Weeks ago, the victim had been carrying out support work together with the Unit for the Search for Missing Persons.

The events occurred when the social leader was leaving a meeting and shortly before arriving at his home he was attacked by unknown persons.

The victim was identified as Willington Hernández, who was the president of the Community Action Board of the La Unión Peneya Inspection, in the municipality of La Montañita, Caquetá.

In addition to his work for the benefit of the community, Willington was also a renowned merchant in the area.

And weeks before his murder, the man accompanied and supported the work of the JEP and the Search Unit for Missing Persons in the local cemetery.

According to Indepaz, since the peace agreement with the FARC-EP was signed, 1,267 social leaders have been assassinated in Colombia; and so far in 2021 the figure has already reached 152.

The institute also warned that there is a presence in the region of the Post FARC EP armed group from the 62nd Front.

So far the authorities have not ruled on the fact that mourns the relatives of the social leader and the community of La Unión Peneya.

It is also unknown if the murder of the social leader is related to his recent accompaniment to the work of the JEP.
