The document was read in an event commemorating the date, at the Largo São Francisco Law School, at the University of São Paulo (USP).

“Three years after a frustrated coup attempt and the assassination plan of an elected President of the Republic, his deputy and a Supreme Court minister, January 8th is the national date to celebrate the victory of democracy, as memory is fundamental so that new acts of this type are not tolerated”, says the text.

The Manifesto in Defense of Democracy, Justice and National Sovereignty was written jointly by the group of lawyers Prerogativas, the legal sector of the Workers’ Party of São Paulo and the Academic Center 11 de Agosto, from the Faculty of Law of USP. The document received support from social movements, political parties and lawyers.

“For the first time in our history, we, Brazilians, were able to witness, after a fair and legally carried out trial by the Federal Supreme Court, the arrest for the crimes of attacking the Democratic Rule of Law and attempted coup d’état of all those who collaborated, executed and organized the frustrated attempts at institutional rupture”, continues the text.

The document also makes reference to the current international situation, marked by aggression by the United States against Venezuela.

“Today primarily marks a civic and historical celebration in defense of democracy. However, it must also be a date on which all of us, Brazilians, redouble our attention to any and all internal or external threats to the Brazilian democratic rule of law and our national sovereignty.”

Before the reading of the document, opponents of the left-wing parties that organized the event caused a disturbance at one of the entrances to the Noble Hall, where the event was held. They were taken out of the room shouting “back down, fascist, back down”.
