Voters going to the polls last Sunday (6) sealed the election for mayor in 11 of the country’s 26 capitals. Boa Vista (RR), Florianópolis (SC), Macapá (AP), Maceió (AL), Reef (FOOT), Rio Branco (B.C), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Savior (BA), Saint Louis (BAD), Teresina (PI) and Victory (ES) already know who will be mayor for the next four years.
Of the 11 victories guaranteed in the first round, ten came from mayors who already held the position and were re-elected. The only exception is in Teresina. There, Silvio Mendes will take over the chair currently occupied by José Pessoa Leal.
Another 15 capitals will have a second round. The voters of Aracaju (SE), Belo Horizonte (MG), Bethlehem (PA), Campo Grande (MS), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Strength (CE), Goiânia (GO), João Pessoa (PB), Manaus (AM), Christmas (RN), clap (TO), Porto Alegre (RS), Porto Velho (RO) and São Paulo (SP) should return to the polls on October 27th.
In some capitals, the election was close to being resolved yesterday, but with less than 1% of votes, the first place candidate was unable to avoid the second round. In João Pessoa, Cícero Lucena finished with 49.16% of the votes, against 21.77% for Marcelo Queiroga (PL). The two continue campaigning.
A similar situation occurred in Porto Alegre. With 49.72% of the votes, Sebastião Melo (MDB) will face Maria do Rosário (PT) in the second round. The PT member had 26.28% of the votes.
The opposite scenario was seen in São Paulo. The last capital to define the names of the second round, the city watched a triple technical draw between Ricardo Nunes (MDB), Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) and Pablo Marçal (PRTB) for around four hours. In the end, Nunes and Boulos went to the second round, but the difference between the Emedebista, first placed, and Marçal was just over 81 thousand votes, or 1.34%. The difference between Nunes and Boulos was 0.41%, totaling a mere 25 thousand votes.
In GoiâniaFred Rodrigues (PL) was third in the polls on the eve of the election, but closed the first round as the most voted, with 31.14% of valid votes. He will compete in the second round with Sandro Mabel (União), who had 27.66% of the votes and played Adriana Accorsi (PT), who was second in the polls, to third place. In Campo Grandethe second round will be contested by two women, Adriane Lopes (PP) and Rose Modesto (União).
Parties
The elections in the country’s capitals showed a predominance of center parties and the right-wing PL. In all second round scenarios there are candidates from the PL or centrist parties. In some cases, both.
Of the 11 capitals that resolved the election in the first round, center parties won in eight. The PSD won in three capitals, Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro and São Luis. With two elections in the first round, there are União Brasil (Salvador and Teresina) and MDB (Boa Vista and Macapá). In Vitória, the Republicans won the first round.
Center parties are those that do not have the same ideological conviction as left- or right-wing parties and, therefore, tend to spend more time at the base of governments, negotiating posts in these governments in exchange for support. The MDB, PSD, PP and União Brasil are some of the exponents of the so-called “centrão”.
The PL elected candidates in Maceió and Rio Branco in the first round. In Recife, the first round election was for João Campos’ PSB. Among the capitals, it was the only victory for a left or center-left party last Sunday.
Second round
The PL secured a place in the second round in nine capitals: Aracaju, Belo Horizonte, Belém, Cuiabá, Fortaleza, Goiânia, João Pessoa, Manaus and Palmas. União Brasil and PT are in the second round in four capitals and MDB in three capitals. With candidates still in the running in 2 capitals are the PSD, PP and Podemos. With one candidate in the second round are PDT, PSOL, PMB and Avante.
