In 100 days, a 16.3% decrease in intentional homicides was achieved

In the first 100 days of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s government, the incidence of intentional homicides in the country decreased by 16.3 percent, reported yesterday Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

When presenting the security report during the presidential morning, the official detailed that in September 2024, 87 murders were committed daily on average, while in December the figure was the lowest of the year: 72.8 victims per day.

He added that between 2018 and 2024 – a period that covers the six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and so far that of Sheinbaum –, the incidence of intentional homicides decreased 18.3 percent. These are consolidated data from 2024he stressed.

In 2018, Figueroa said, there were 100.5 murder victims registered per day and in 2024 the average was 82.1 every 24 hours.

He highlighted that about half of the homicides in the country during 2024 (49.4 percent) were committed in seven entities: Guanajuato occupies first place, with 10.5 percent of the total; Baja California follows, with 7.9 percent; state of Mexico, 7.5; Chihuahua, 6.7; Jalisco, 6 percent; Guerrero, 5.8, and Nuevo León, with 5.1 percent.

With the exception of Guanajuato, where intentional homicides increased between September and December of last year, in the other six entities there were decreasing numbers in that period, stated Figueroa.

He also said that in the first 100 days of the Sheinbaum government, the daily average of high-impact crimes decreased: 26.5 percent less in feminicide, 19.7 percent less injuries due to gunshots, and a decrease of 10.6 percent. in extortion.

There was also a 4.7 percent reduction in all violent robberies: residential robberies with assaults, a decrease of 9.7 percent; vehicle assault, 4.1 recoil; hit to transport, drop of 6.5; robbery from a pedestrian, 10.6 percent, and robbery from a business with violence, minus 2.8 percent.

For his part, the head of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, pointed out that thanks to the strategy undertaken by the current administration, from October 1, 2024 to January 1, 2025, 7,720 people were detained for high impact crimes.

He stressed that the authorities seized more than 3,600 firearms and 66.5 tons of drugs, including 1,168 kilos and 561,000 fentanyl pills.

The secured drugs represent more than 60 million doses that will not reach the streets, nor will they be able to destroy the lives of families or young people.he pointed out.

In that period, García Harfuch pointed out, the public force dismantled 115 clandestine laboratories for the production of methamphetamines in Baja California, state of Mexico, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Querétaro, Sinaloa and Sonora. It also secured 148,609 liters and 28,261 kilos of chemical substances, 157 organic synthesis reactors, 62 condensers and 56 distillers.

He stated that this represents an economic impact of 27,118 million pesos for criminal organizations.
