Faced with the increase in cases of measles in the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) called the region to strengthen vaccination, improve surveillance and speed up the response to outbreaks.
According to the latest epidemiological update, until September 12, 11 thousand 313 contagios and 23 deaths were confirmed in 10 countries, “a 31 -time rise compared to the 358 reported in the same period of 2024”.
The PAHO explained that this year 10 countries have reported, respectively, cases and deaths as follows: Canada, 4 thousand 849 and one; Mexico, 4,553 and 19; United States, 1,454 and three. They concentrate 96 percent of the regional total. Cases have also been notified in Bolivia (320), Brazil (28), Argentina (35), Belize (34), Paraguay (35), Peru (4) and Costa Rica (1).
In Mexico City this week there was mass immunization. Thus, a vaccination megacenter was installed at the University Olympic Stadium. From Wednesday 17 to Friday, people were vaccinated from six months to 49 years of age.
The last report of the Ministry of Health of the Epidemiological Week 36 (as of September 12) details that the entity with the largest number of cases is Chihuahua, with 4 thousand 133; Sonora also stands out, with 87, and Guerrero, with 46. Mexico City has only reported six.
Likewise, 88 percent of those who have infected have no history of measles vaccination, while 12 percent have a dose and four percent, two or more.
