The National High School Examination (Enem) will undergo changes in the coming years. The exam to haveIt has to be adapted to the new secondary education, which reformed the curriculum of this stage of education. The forecast is that the new model will be applied from 2024 onwards. “We have such a big change coming up and the school needs to know beyond a shadow of a doubt exactly what is going to be required of its students. This is very urgent”, says emeritus professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais Chico Soares. “This is an issue that has to be dealt with right at the beginning of the new management. There are different solutions, but we do not have a solution that is accepted by all the actors in this debate”.
Soares is a former president of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) and is also a former member of the National Council of Education (CNE), where he was one of the rapporteurs of the so-called National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), a document that defines the minimum that should be taught in schools at all stages of education.
In March of this year, the Ministry of Education (MEC) released the main changes that should occur in the Enem from 2024 onwards. exam will pass to to have a first test focused on knowledge foreseen in the BNCC and writing and a Mondayfocused on the specific training that students will receive in high school.
The alterations are foreseen in a CNE opinion and were also discussed with several actors, such as the National Council of Secretaries of Education (Consed), which brings together the state secretaries of Education, responsible for the public schools where most of the students of education are enrolled. medium.
For Soares, this is an opportunity for the country to review what is or is not necessary for learning in schools. “Enem guides high school. If the Enem goes well, our student will study and learn things that are more relevant to his life”, she says.

In the other part of the training, the students themselves will be able to choose an itinerary to deepen their learning. The options allow emphasis in areas of languages, mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences and technical education. The offer of itineraries will depend on the capacity of education networks and Brazilian schools.
On the first day of the Enem test, the idea is that the questions are interdisciplinary, that is, they address more than one area of knowledge, and the main focus is on Portuguese and mathematics. The English test will also be integrated into the other areas. already the Monday This stage of the exam will focus on the specific training that students will receive in high school. For this to become a reality, according to sociologist and retired professor at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) Maria Helena Guimarães de Castro, some measures by Inep are necessary and urgent, such as the disclosure of matrices that will guide the preparation of future tests. Maria Helena was executive secretary of the MEC and president of the CNE. She was the rapporteur of the opinion that proposes the necessary changes for the new exam.

Other measures identified as necessary by Maria Helena are the creation and strengthening of the new Enem governance council. “As it exists in most countries, with state secretariats, public and private schools, under the coordination of Inep. This committee must monitor Inep’s work, providing transparency to the process”, she explains. The council was formed, but, according to Maria Helena, it still needs to be consolidated.
The Enem changes were mentioned by Inep in a press conference on Monday (21), after the application of Enem 2022. “The Inep team today, already thinking about the application of future exams, it is working on the elaboration of the matrices for the 2024 Enem, linked to the BNCC. Of course, this will be applied in 2024, but still this year we want to publish the Enem 2023 schedule, so that people can plan ahead”, said the substitute president of Inep, Carlos Moreno.
According to the president of the National Council of Secretaries of Education (Consed), Vitor de Angelo, the expectation is that the new management of the MEC will comply with what has already been defined so far in relation to the new Enem. “The Enem is quite mature in terms of discussion, about the structure, about the assessment model. Now, you have to ask the questions, do the tests, you still have a big task”, he says.
The secretary points out that the new secondary education has very different aspects from that adopted in schools until today?? “It is completely new, so the new Enem needs to be aligned with that, since it is the subsequent step, it is the gateway to higher education. There is no way to attend high school wanting to go to higher education without passing the Enem and the Enem cannot be an assessment that focuses on the knowledge you had in high school.”
