Geneva. Immunization coverage against covid-19 remains below 10 percent in 20 countries, most of them in Africa, the World Health Organization expert committee for vaccination policy (SAGE) lamented yesterday.

Vaccine deployment reached a pace without precedents in the world and almost all countries managed to have an inoculation campaign in less than 12 months, the experts revealed in a statement.

However, 20 countries, compared to 34 in mid-January, still do not exceed a level of 10 percent vaccination, Kate O’Brien, WHO’s immunization officer, warned at a news conference.

These are countries that work very hard to advance their vaccination programsO’Brien noted.

The international mechanism Covax, managed by the WHO and other partners, has enough doses to immunize before June 70 percent of the population in 92 low- and middle-income countries that are recipients of donations.

The WHO set a goal of reaching a vaccination rate of precisely that percentage in each country by mid-2022.

So far, the Covax mechanism has delivered 1.4 billion doses in 145 countries. This estimate is short of their target of 2 billion by the end of 2021.

On the other hand, the British group The Lancet Discovery Science published a scientific article on the Cuban Abdala vaccine, in which it is shown that it is safe, well tolerated and induces a powerful immune response against SARS-CoV-2.

The WHO said it is tracking dozens of cases of two new sub-variants of the highly transmissible omicron variant, in order to assess whether they are more infectious or dangerous.

Shanghai yesterday reduced restrictions in some neighborhoods of the Chinese metropolis after protests over strict rules against covid-19, which led to the confinement of 25 million people.

The authorities of Guangzhou, in southeastern China, decreed the suspension of face-to-face classes and the restriction of entry and exit from the city due to a new outbreak of coronavirus.

The number of children and adolescents suffering from anorexia increased in Germany during the pandemic, specialists from this country reported.

The pandemic has left 499 million 287 thousand 16 confirmed cases and 6 million 180 thousand 713 deaths globally, according to Johns Hopkins University.
