Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) clarified the circumstances in which an incident occurred during a security operation immigration control made in the sector Lost Savannahafter the dissemination of images in social networksspecifying that the procedure originated after a direct aggression against its acting personnel.
According to the official report, owners and people linked to a food establishment located in the sector New Neighborhoodin the aforementioned sector, will be brought to justice for physically attacking immigration agents who were carrying out work to verify the immigration status of foreign workers.
The DGM explained that, during the operation, an altercation occurred caused by the owners of the business and other people present, who attacked the staff with knives, blunt objects and stones, putting the physical integrity of the agents at risk.

The entity specified that the actions carried out are covered by article 6 of the General Migration Law no. 285-04, which empowers the institution to inspect establishments and workplaces, as well as in article 107 of the aforementioned legislation.
Faced with the aggression received, the members of the DGM acted in legitimate defense and in coordination with the corresponding authorities, with the aim of preserving order and avoiding major consequences. The incident occurred in front of a National Police detachment.

Likewise, the immigration entity reported that it has opened an internal investigation to verify possible excesses during the intervention and warned that, if individual responsibilities are proven, the members of the institution who have exceeded the use of force will be sanctioned, in accordance with the established protocols and current regulations.
Immigration called on the owners of businesses and establishments not to resist the inspection and verification tasks, in order to avoid confrontations with the authority and guarantee that these procedures are carried out within the framework of order and legality.
Finally, the institution reiterated that its operations are carried out regularly, in accordance with the General Migration Law No. 285-04 and with respect for human rights, and warned that it will not tolerate acts of violence against its personnel in the exercise of their functions.
