Immigration crisis: Coast Guard deports 95 Cuban rafters

MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard repatriated this Thursday 95 Cuban rafters who had been intercepted in recent days trying to reach the Florida Keys.

A report of that entity indicates that the migrants were returned to the island by the crew of the coast guard Edgar Culberston.

The 95 Cubans had been intercepted in five different groups. One of them was sighted on Saturday afternoon about 30 miles southwest of Cayo Marquesas by an HC-144 aircraft from the Miami Coast Guard Air Station, which alerted the watchmen in the Key West Sector.

On Monday, also with air support, three other groups were located in the morning: the first about 20 miles southeast of Key Largo, the second about 10 miles south of Tavernier, and the third about a mile south of Boot Key.

The fifth group was located Tuesday morning by the crew of the Coast Guard William Flores, who alerted the watchmen of the Key West Sector to the presence of a migrant boat about three miles south of Loggerhead Key.

The statement indicates that, prior to their deportation, all intercepted migrants have received food, water, shelter, and basic medical care.

“Going to sea in rustic and unsafe boats puts your life at risk. When you are detained, you will be repatriated to your country of origin or departure,” said Lieutenant Peter Hutchison, of the Seventh District of the Coast Guard, in statements collected by that entity.

From Oct. 1 to date, Coast Guard crews have intercepted 2,005 Cuban migrants, nearly a third of those apprehended and deported in fiscal year 2022, which ended Sept. 30.
