The Director of Planning of the Municipality of Montevideo, Luis Oreggioni, gave a press conference on Monday where he reported that the commune will not provide the necessary authorizations for the development of the private project MVD 360, which aims to create an artificial island from the boulevard from Punta Gorda with a large space for homes, shops and recreational spaces. In this sense, he explained that the project “is not viable for Montevideo.”
“It presents certain innovative aspects for the city that should not be viewed negatively. (But) making a global balance, it is not viable. It concentrates in a single investment and in a single place a huge number of square meters of homes and offices. It confronts and affects processes in the centrality of Montevideo, the Center and the Old City, places for which the IMM is strongly committed”, said Oreggioni.
The hierarch insisted that “the strong danger for the central areas” of the capital “is the main element.” “It is a question of planning balance. If you create a huge number of square meters of supply in an attractive place, the possibility of people moving creates an imbalance », he synthesized.
The hierarch assured that the project needs the approval of the IMM and that the negative opinion has already been expressed. In the event that they present the proposal anyway, “it must be analyzed by the Departmental Board”, where the Broad Front has a majority.”We understand that the project is not going to go ahead,” he said.
The project
MVD 360 was presented by Jirkel SA to the national Executive Power and was already approved by a decree dated May 9, which was reported in the first instance by Search. According to El Observador, the investment has a cost close to US$ 2,300 million.
The decree signed by President Luis Lacalle Pou speaks of a “new area reclaimed from the sea off the coast of Montevideo in the Punta Gorda area, where a marina, real estate developments and areas for public use of leisure and recreation would be located.” .
«The Ministry of Transport and Public Works on March 17, 2022, when proceeding to the analysis of the proposal presented, states that it is of great interest to the Administration since it will contribute to the hierarchization of the city in general and of the Rambla Montevideo in particular, as well as expanding the port offer of the city connecting it even more with the region”, highlighted the government in the norm that accepted the initiative.
