The Municipality of Montevideo resolved to increase the price of the bus ticket in the capital as well as the price per hour in the paid parking lots in force in the country, the commune made it known this Monday through a statement.
The new prices, which will apply from midnight on Thursday, January 5, represent an increase of 3 pesos for the Metropolitan Transportation System (STM). This means that those who pay the ticket with a card must now pay an amount of 42 pesos (before 39). On the other hand, the two-hour ticket will go up to 62 pesos and the downtown ticket to 29.
On the other hand, those who pay the ticket in cash must pay 52 pesos for the common or one hour, 78 pesos for two hours and differential and 39 pesos for the downtown.
In the case of retirees and pensioners, Category A will maintain its prices, like the ABC ticket. In the case of the latter, the return will increase to 9 pesos.
salary recovery
The IM indicated that this rise “compensates for the wage waiver of transport workers during the health crisis, as well as the agreed reduction in company income due to low demand.”
“From the health emergency situation experienced since March 13, 2020, the transport system suffered a brutal loss of its income from ticket sales: 37% (2020), 34% (2021) and in 2022 it is estimated will be 18% compared to 2019. This adjustment contemplates the recovery of these sectors [trabajadores y empresas] that have sustained the crisis in the sector, and it is justified by the fact that by the year 2023 there will be no extraordinary assistance”, justified the commune.
Likewise, in the document the IM maintains that despite the increase, the ticket rate accumulates a drop in real terms if the time elapsed between 2020 and 2023 is taken into account.
“Despite having faced the loss of 200 million tickets in the last three years, the system has achieved that the value of the 1-hour trip paid with electronic money, considering the present adjustment in the rate, will experience a slight reduction in real terms of 0.34% from January 2020 to January 2023. In turn, the rate for category A retirees and for the beneficiaries of the ABC ticket will be reduced by 21.7% in real terms in the same period”, he maintains in the text.
Get up from paid parking
The commune also foresees an increase in the price of paid parking. From Monday, January 16, the hour will go up by 4 pesos and will be worth 48, while the half hour will be 24 pesos after going up 2 pesos.
“The last variation was in February 2020. The adjustment in the price of the system that works from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., responds to the fact that the value was not adjusted in the last three years and represents the evolution of the CPI [Índice de Precios del Consumo] of the last year”, maintains the Intendancy.
