IM puts job creation as a priority for 2023

The Director of Economic Development of the Municipality of Montevideo, Gustavo Cabrera, when presenting to the Departmental Board the 2021 accountability and the goals for the coming year, announced that the promotion and generation of employment will be the main axis of the Department’s management to the year 2023.

Cabrera pointed out that the actions carried out by the Department in 2021, at the end of the pandemic, had “a social focus. We work thinking about the needs of the people, so that they will not be left without their sources of employment”.

He stressed that in the framework of the pandemic, measures had to be taken to maintain labor sources by working together with other departments of the Intendancy.

Some of the measures that helped companies cushion the effect of the pandemic and protect employment in the sector are:

  • Postponement of due dates in taxes for the hotel sector
  • Use of public space with 100% bonus for the gastronomic sector
  • Tax incentive for generating new jobs or reinstatements
  • Bonus of the bromatological rate
  • For monotributistas and sole proprietorships of bars, restaurants, cafes, barbecues, pizzerias and other food companies: exemption from fines and surcharges generated by non-payment and possibility of counterclaim

On the other hand, in the Montevideo Agricultural Market (MAM), through different policies, the main objective was to maintain the sources of employment and the continuation of the operators and workers applying the following measures:

  • Reduction of common expenses in terms of special discounts and not applying readjustments according to the CPI
  • Regarding leases, the decision was made to reduce the percentage applied to the gastronomy category.

The director of Economic Development highlighted the work towards a system of public purchases oriented towards economic, productive and social development.

“You cannot be indifferent to the State with whom you contract. With this criterion we acted when contracting services, with a view that went beyond seeing what was cheaper, to contemplate what our people needed. In the same sense, we continue hiring national labor. Our gaze is not economistic but rather social, always thinking of the people”.

Cabrera also stressed that “for this government the ABC is the people. We put people at the center of our work and this budget clearly demonstrates that.” He indicated that, following the guidance of the departmental program, work will continue with a strategy that combines development, growth and sustainability with distribution and equal opportunities.

The chief explained that actions will be focused on the most affected sectors of society and on those that are driving employment. “Employment is one of the central concerns of our people and, therefore, the central axis of our work,” he emphasized.
