The Director of Sociocultural Promotion of the Municipality of Montevideo (IM), Federico Graña, met this Saturday with a group of neighbors from Villa Dolores to explain them changes that will promote the commune in the zoo groundswhose walls will be torn down to generate an open park.

As Graña told Telemundo (Channel 12), on Works will start in Januarywhich are part of the Montevideo Avanza plan launched by the Carolina Cosse administration.

“The goal is to open the park”assured the municipal hierarch. In addition, he indicated that the works will begin in January.

This Saturday, Graña and several neighbors from the neighborhood toured the zoo grounds, where some animals still remain.

“We toured the entire closed area of the park to show the changes that are going to be made to make it a more open park… Tear down the walls so people can see and change some of the seasonsGrana detailed.

And he added that he the lake will be remodeled, a flower park will be installed, in addition to planting native vegetation and jacarandas.

The plan to remodel the Montevideo zoo had been announced by Cosse at the end of June, when he announced on his social networks that the walls of Villa Dolores would be torn down to make an open park.

The director of Public Spaces, Natalia Castro, had said in June to Telemundo that with the changes in the zoo would be enabled 40 thousand square meters more of “public space”which, he said, would be the equivalent of four park blocks.

Regarding the current walls, Castro pointed out that the “rigid walls” will be replaced by “transparent” ones, similar to what there is today in the “front part”, where there are bars but you can see inside.

The director of Public Spaces also spoke of new accesses (in addition to the entrance through Rivera Avenue) through Alejo Rossel and Rius streets; Liber Arce and C. Dolores Pereira de Rossell.

The works in Villa Dolores will be financed through the trust for US$ 50 million achieved by the administration of Carolina Cosse with the votes of the Broad Front and a mayor of the Colorado Party in the Departmental Board of Montevideo.

That trust is presented after Cosse’s original plan, which consisted of a US$70 million loan to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for sanitation and cleaning, failed.which was shipwrecked by one vote.

The new form of indebtedness proposed by Cosse will promote public works in 2023 and did not require special majorities, since it has at June 30, 2025 as the maximum term for repaymentwhich allowed its approval without special majorities in the Departmental Board.

When this trust was presented, the director of Culture of the administration, María Inés Obaldía, He explained to the councilors what some of the works consisted of, such as the Villa Dolores park, which depends on their division.

The neighbor who lives opposite does not have a graffiti or fenced wall, nor smelly goats on the other side, but a park where you can appreciate nature and some super-kept spaces. Instead of squirrels from Central Park we will have peacocks, which are the true owners of Villa Dolores,” Obaldía explained in mid-August at the meeting.
