ILO: Venezuelans contributed US$88 million to Peru in 2021

.

On International Migrants Day, which was commemorated yesterday, the International Labor Organization (ILO), highlighted the contribution made to Peru by foreigners who immigrated to our country.

In that sense, he pointed out that its impact has been positive on the economic, social and cultural development of the entire world.

According to the ILO, Peru has had the presence of African, Chinese, Japanese and European migrants, as well as “the recent incorporation of nearly 1.5 million Venezuelans“.

“Beyond seeking better opportunities, their effort and talent have energized key sectors and enriched the country’s cultural diversity,” considers the international organization.

Likewise, it details that, according to the Venezuelan-Peruvian Chamber of Entrepreneurs, the Venezuelan community generated a tax contribution of approximately 88 million dollars in 2021, which is equivalent to 0.04% of GDP.

In addition, it mentions that the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) indicates that the internal consumption of these migrants contributed 0.33% to GDP growth in 2018.

The ILO explains that migrants “have found their niche in the creation of micro and small businesses,” which energizes various sectors such as commerce and services.

However, he warns that migration is not without integration challenges. For example, more than 80# of migrants in Peru work without a contract, while 29.6% have experienced some type of discrimination or xenophobia.

Given this, the international organization highlights the importance of executing public policies that promote immigration regularization, as well as labor formalization and the recognition of professional titles and skills.

“It is essential to guarantee that migration is an engine of development based on the principles of decent work, equality and social justice,” said Gloria Zambrano, national coordinator of Labor Migration and Human Mobility in Peru at the ILO.
