A casino that exploited clandestine sports betting was raided this Tuesday in Ciudad del Este. Those responsible are exposed to five years in prison for failing to comply with current regulations in the field, imposed by the National Commission for Gaming (Conajzar).
It is about “Slots Macao”, which within the site illegally offered online sports bets through the platform Apostaseguro.bet. Although the company Yem SA has a precautionary measure, it governs exclusively in physical mode, not online, for two locations in Asunción and another two in Ciudad del Este. The investigation is now in the hands of Unit 4 of the zonal Prosecutor’s Office.
Failure to comply with these regulations also risks those people who favor or collaborate so that the punishable act takes place. This also includes the gamblers themselves, who are exposed to two years in jail or fines.
OJEDA
Hugo Ojeda, Aposta.la’s lawyer in Ciudad del Este, requested the raid to the Public Ministry, and with the support of the National Police, carried out the intervention last Tuesday.
“We don’t have the numbers yet of how much they moved. It was a new place ”, he affirmed.
He pointed out that at the country level there are many houses that offer clandestine bets. He explained that only in Cordillera they carried out around six interventions.
“We cannot demand too much from the Conajzar because it does not have legal status. It is dependent on the Attorney General’s Office, it must circumvent a lot of bureaucracy to make the interventions, “he said.
CONTEXT
Since 2018, the only company authorized to operate sports betting in the national territory is Daruma Sam SA (Aposta.la), awarded by public tender No. 4/2017. Any other company that operates without the authorization of said regulatory entity is considered illegal, in any way.
The operation of this type of clandestine business represents a detriment to the Paraguayan State, since the same legislation establishes that the item pays a fee of 21%. This amount is earmarked for social welfare and support for outstanding athletes with limited resources through the National Sports Secretariat (SND).
