Ilenia Medina, deputy of the National Assembly, recalled that countries like the US do not allow NGOs to be financed by entities outside their borders. She added that if that nation considers Venezuela a threat, it should not be funding NGOs in the country.
The deputy of the National Assembly elected in 2020 and first vice president of the Foreign Policy Commission, Ilenia Medina, believes that international NGOs that operate in the country should also submit to Venezuelan legislation, this in reference to the eventual approval of the International Cooperation Law by parliament this year according to schedule.
In an interview granted to VTVMedina stressed that the articles unleashed a controversy, especially abroad, because in his opinion they do not want the issue of NGOs to be organized and recalled that in countries like the United States they do not allow them to be financed by entities that operate outside their borders.
In this sense, he said that “if the United States considers us an unusual and extraordinary threat, it cannot be financing NGOs in Venezuela. That would even be classified as treason (…) International NGOs must also go through that filter (the law) because it is unthinkable that in other countries like the United States, NGOs with their own agenda are allowed”.

Ilenia Medina also referred to the issue of the Asset Protection Law, which is currently being discussed in the National Assembly. On this, she highlighted the importance of defending national sovereignty and the country’s jurisdiction over its assets abroad.
As explained by the parliamentarian, if the government of President Joe Biden decides to take action against Citgo, it could participate in litigation that is for its defense and even, thanks to the US “jurisprudence” of acting in foreign courts – as it assures happened with the case by Alex Saab – you can resort to a court in another country that allows it and sue the US.
It also explains that the role of the Attorney General’s Office is reinforced for its work in the protection of Venezuelan assets outside the country, just as it already plans to declare the nullity of any sentence that is contrary to their care and that is detrimental to the sovereignty over those assets.
