Criticism of the management of the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations continues, Jose Miguel Smoked. The last one was the former chancellor, Ignacio Walker (formerly DC)who went into a tailspin against the performance of the authority in recent weeks, especially after the failed appointment of Nicolás Eyzaguirre to the International Development Bank (IDB).
“(Ahumada) does not understand how the global world works. Moreover, he has an ideological prejudice regarding that world. He does not understand how international economic relations work. There is an absurd technicality in the arguments given by the undersecretary and he does not understand the political importance to build rules,” Walker said in conversation with emoltv.
Ahumada had already come under criticism due to his opposition to the signing of the TPP11 treaty – including disappearances of sites – which in Walker’s opinion tarnishes the good work that Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola is doing.
In this sense, he regrets what is happening “not with the chancellor or the Chancellery, Antonia Urrejola is very clear on this matter and President Boric is very realistic, he is a great politician and he already understood this dynamic. But these doubts remain.”
“There is permanent tension. We all see it (…), so it leaves President Boric, the minister and the Foreign Ministry on a very bad footing,” he added.
Regarding the failed appointment of Eyzaguirre, Walker pointed to drawing lessons, but criticized that “perhaps we wasted the opportunity of having someone like Nicolás Eyzaguirre in the presidency of the IDB, but there were failures there, there were failures in the conduct of foreign policy in this election was a bit improvised, at the last minute. This was seen coming. These candidacies are not improvised, they require time, application, you have to see the scenarios and build alliances”.
