Goodbye to the PRD
In June 2018, before the presidential elections, Ifigenia Martínez changed parties again. He presented his resignation from the PRD after 29 years of militancy to join the ranks of Morena, a political institute founded by López Obrador in 2014.
Although Martínez y Hernández was an ally of López Obrador, she had decided to retain her membership in the PRD. But things changed in 2018, when this party made an alliance with the National Action (PAN) to support the presidential candidacy of Ricardo Anaya.
“I regret to recognize that the party that we founded in 1989, men and women committed to the historical values of a democratic and progressive left, today finds itself, in my opinion, in the spectrum of a party consistent with conservative principles,” Martínez expressed in a letter. in which he confirmed his resignation.
However, even before her departure from the PRD, Ifigenia Martínez was already a Morena candidate for the Senate of the Republic through the multi-member route. After the elections, she became the longest-serving legislator in the Congress of the Union.
Belisario Domínguez Medal
On October 7, 2021, the Senate of the Republic recognized Ifigenia Martínez with the Belisario Domínguez Medal—the highest award from Congress—for her career and contribution to the country’s democracy.
In the presence of friends, family and colleagues, such as Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, Ifigenia Martínez offered an emotional message in which she called for unity and to consolidate an Economic and Social Council, as well as establish a progressive tax system, with a federalist distribution, and a “Tax on excessive personal wealth and income.”
President López Obrador was absent from the ceremony, but through a letter he sent he expressed his congratulations and apologized for not attending.
Her entire career makes her a reference for Mexican women, which is why in her honor the ‘Ifigenia Martínez’ Women’s House was inaugurated in 2013 in the Coyoacán municipality, where the first gender library was established in the capital. of the country.
