The Buenos Aires Minister of Security, sergio berniaffirmed this Sunday that until now “there is no model in the world that has been successful against drug trafficking” and while there is a “public debate facing society”, it is necessary to “make the tools efficient and effective” with the that Argentina tells, although he warned that in the country “the execution of the sentence is a joke”.
“There is no model in the world that has been successful against drug trafficking,” Berni said in dialogue with Radio Mitre, and assured: “It seems to me that Argentina needs a public debate facing society“.
Asked about the measures to follow in the fight against drug trafficking, the minister maintained that in the meantime it is necessary to “make the tools that we have today efficient and effective, with the paradigms that we have.”
Today Argentina has the opportunity to seriously discuss what political paradigms it must deepen or change in order not to suffer the scourge of drug trafficking and drug abuse.

Along these lines, he stressed that justice is needed “that does not expect 23 people to die (referring to the victims that there were the previous week for consumption of adulterated cocaine) to release a search warrant that has been sleeping in a drawer for four months.”
Likewise, he pointed out that it is not a “penalty problem”, but rather “a problem of serving sentences”. And he recalled that the drug trafficker known as “el Paisa”, arrested last Thursday, “was in prison, he asked the judge for permission to go out for a little walk and never came back.”
“The problem is that in Argentina the execution of the sentence is a joke“, he asserted, and regretted that “this had to happen for justice to move.”
In addition, the former provincial senator distinguished the “phenomenon of drug trafficking” from the “phenomenon of addiction”, which are usually “confused” with each other, believing that “addiction is a product of drug trafficking.”
“The product of drug trafficking is that unstoppable violence, that unstoppable corruption and the destruction of the social fabric of the places where drugs are sold,” he specified.
Berni insisted that “we have to return to the subject of the paradigm“, and recalled the case of the United States that has “the most careful border, the most controlled skies and the most important police structure in the world, the DEA”, and yet “only (the city of) New York has more than two million” consumers.
When consulted by the operation he commanded to find the doses of adulterated cocaine, he maintained that if we had not “worked as we work, the next day we would have had two thousand deaths” and stressed that a “massive misfortune” was avoided.
“I have no doubt that it was the most complicated day of my life, I never felt so much responsibility, I knew that the responsibility of hundreds of lives of Buenos Aires residents was on my shoulders,” he confided.
