Santiago. The Civil Defense of this city works on the survey of vulnerable areas as a way to anticipate prevention and relief actions on the occasion of climatic and meteorological events.
The survey of the Civil Defense of Santiago has particular motivation before the beginning of the most active part of the cyclonic season whose meteorological phenomena cause rains, floods and landslides.
This work will allow the relief agency to quantify the families exposed to this type of climatic event and identify places of protection in the event of an eventual evacuation.
Santiago has great difficulties with the storm drainage system, promoting flooding in residential areas, streets and avenues that endanger life and property.
According to studies carried out in 2019, more than three thousand families reside in Santiago in 52 areas identified as vulnerable.
Every year the Civil Defense activates an emergency protocol on the occasion of the cyclonic season, among which are the disaster mitigation and prevention committees in coordination with the Government.
“The Disaster Mitigation and Prevention Committee is made up of 30 public and private institutions coordinated by the Provincial Government.
From this space, reviews of the 137 shelters or shelters that can be used in case of catastrophes are carried out, where preference is given to the premises of neighborhood associations, Catholic temples and others.
