Intense weather activity is affecting the islands of San Andrés and Providencia, where heavy rains and winds have been recorded due to an atmospheric disturbance in the western Caribbean Sea, identified as AL97. This phenomenon has generated an alert in the area.

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) reported that this disturbance has a 50% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours, and the probability increases to 80% in the next seven days. If the system continues to develop, it could become a tropical storm.

The behavior of this phenomenon is being monitored by the Tropical Cyclone Alert Technical Board, made up of Ideam, the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), Civil Aeronautics (Aerocivil), the Colombian Air Force and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).

These entities are in constant communication to inform the population about any changes in the trajectory or intensity of the system.

Suspended activities

Authorities have asked island residents to keep up to date through official channels, refrain from nautical activities and follow the recommendations of relief agencies.

It is essential to pay attention to upcoming weather reports, as the system could rapidly intensify, causing greater impacts in the Colombian Caribbean region.
