SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- Bob Newhart, an icon of American comedy, has died at the age of 94 in Los Angeles, according to his publicist, Jerry Digney.
As confirmed by the representative to the magazine VarietyThe star died after battling a series of illnesses.
Newhart is best known for programs such as Newhart and The Bob Newhart Showbut has appeared in a long list of projects over the past 50 years.
Winner of an Emmy, a Golden Globe and three Grammys, he appeared on the comedy scene with roles in films such as Hot Millions and Catch-22but it was not until The Bob Newhart Show when the public was able to enjoy his dry humor and wit.
Newhart was also known to younger audiences as Santa Elf in the 2003 Christmas classic Elf.
His roles as Sid in The Dark Knight have also transcended in the history of American cinema. Legally Blonde 2 or Lou Sherman in Horrible Bossesbut more recently has made appearances in The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon.
In addition to his screen presence in films and series since the 1960s, Newhart has participated in animation projects such as The Simpson, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under.
Beginning in 1960, when his recordings of stand-up comedy became bestsellers, Newhart ushered in a new style of comedy that relied on observation and psychology.
His work opened the door for later comedians such as Steve Martin. Both because of his deadpan, stuttering tone and his subject matter, Newhart was able to reach a wide audience in the United States and abroad.
