“This is great news for the department: the creation of this new zonal center in the municipal seat will work in coordination with the center we already have in Nazareth. It will allow us to strengthen our actions to prevent malnutrition of Wayúu children in several corregimientos of the largest municipality of La Guajira and whose population is very dispersed”, Baracaldo maintained.

The General Director of ICBF also announced that they have worked with the National Registry to initiate identification days, in order to guarantee Wayúu boys and girls their right to have an identity, so that they can access health services as well as enjoy other State programs.
It should be remembered that during the visit of the President Gustavo Petro, on December 9, 2022, to La Guajira, reiterated to the director of the ICBF that urgent measures must be taken to combat malnutrition among children and adolescents in this region of the country.

President Petro also highlighted the importance of the participation of the Wayúu community in these processes, indicating that “The first thing is, perhaps, a piece of advice from expert Wayúu people, hopefully women who have studied this, to link the Wayúu conception of what a real family welfare policy could be to the ICBF”.
