IBGE predicts record crop of 261.7 million tons in 2022

IBGE predicts record crop of 261.7 million tons in 2022

The Brazilian crop of cereals, pulses and oilseeds should hit a record 261.7 million tons in 2022. Compared to last year, the forecast increase is 3.3% or 8.5 million tons. However, the August estimate was 0.7% lower than the one calculated in July, or 1.8 million tons less.IBGE predicts record crop of 261.7 million tons in 2022

The data are from the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released today (8) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). According to the research manager, Carlos Barradas, the reduction in the estimate July for August occurred due to the influence of climatic issues.

“The main negative variations occurred in Paraná (-865,300 t), in Goiás (-559,010 t), in Minas Gerais (-532,786 t), in Ceará (-70,185 t), in Alagoas (-24,753 t), in Espírito Santo (-30 t) and in Piauí (-10 t). But it is worth mentioning that the harvested area reached 73 million hectares, 6.5% greater (4.5 million hectares more) than the harvested area in 2021, and 0.1% greater (61.1 thousand hectares more) than in the previous year. last month. These numbers show that producers have invested in increasing crop production due to the high prices of agricultural commodities”.

crops

The main products of the research are rice, corn and soybeans, which together account for 91.5% of the estimated production and 87.1% of the area to be harvested.

In the estimate for corn production, there was an increase of 9.8% in the area compared to 2021, being 7.7% in 1st harvest corn and 10.5% in 2nd harvest corn. According to Barradas, as there were no climatic problems that could harm the Monday harvest, unlike last year when there was no rain, the estimate is that corn production will increase 25.2% compared to 2021, reaching 109.9 million tons.

Soybeans, the country’s main commodity, rose 4.7% in the area compared to last year. As for the volume of production, there was a growth of 0.1% compared to July, but the estimate is for a fall of 11.9% compared to 2021, with a total of 118.8 million tons, due to the lack of rains. in the south center of the country, as the research manager explains.

“Although producers have increased the area where soybeans are planted, climate problems have brought down the potential for agricultural production of Brazilian soybeans in 2022. The loss of productivity is directly related to climate problems”.

The area of rice fell by 2.6%, herbaceous cotton seed increased by 17.7% and wheat increased its area by 9%, reaching a record 9.7 million tons, which represents 24.1% more than the volume produced in 2021. “The increase in domestic wheat production is a response by the Brazilian producer to the restrictions on international supply due to the problems of the Ukrainian war”, says Barradas.

According to the analysis of the IBGE, the production of rice and beans should be enough to meet the consumption of the domestic market, with a total of 10.6 million tons and 3.1 million tons, respectively.

As for coffee, production should reach 3.2 million tons, adding arabica and canephora species, an increase of 0.9% compared to the estimate July and an increase of 9.6% compared to 2021. According to Barradas, the dry and cold weather harmed the grain.

“In 2022 to haveWe were going to have a positive biennial year for Arabica coffee, and it should produce more than it is currently producing. This is not happening because the dry and excessively cold weather of winter 2021 has reduced the production potential of Arabica coffee. The major producers are Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Bahia and Espírito Santo. Canéfora coffee has great production in Espírito Santo and Rondônia. This species grows 9.4% compared to 2021”.

regional production

the estimate of August compared to 2021, is an increase in the production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds in the Central-West (11.4%), North (11%), Southeast (10.8%) and Northeast (10.3%) %). The estimate for the South is a fall of 14.6%.

In terms of monthly variation, only the North Region had an increase of 2.1%. The Midwest fell by 0.4%, the South by 1.3%, the Northeast had a drop of 0.3% and the Southeast Region recorded a decrease of 1.9% in the estimated harvest in the monthly passage July for august.

in the estimate of Augustthe participation of each region in the national production was 49.6% for the Midwest, 25.1% for the South, the Southeast has 10.4%, the Northeast 9.7% and the North Region accounts for 5, 2% of the country’s production of cereals, pulses and oilseeds.

Among the states, Mato Grosso is the largest national producer of grains, with a share of 30.8% of the national total, followed by Paraná (13.2%), Goiás (10.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (9, 8%), Mato Grosso do Sul (8.1%) and Minas Gerais (6.5%). Together, these states represent 78.7% of national production.
