Industrial production in the country changed 0.1% from March to April this year, according to data from the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM) released today (3) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This is the third consecutive advance of the indicator, which accumulates a high of 1.4% in the three-month period.
“Industrial production, when signaling a positive change of 0.1% in April 2022, marked the third consecutive month of expansion, but eliminated the 1.9% decrease registered in last January. The industrial sector is still 1.5% below the pre-pandemic level, that is, February 2020, and 18% below the record level, reached in May 2011”, explained the survey manager, André Macedo.
In the quarterly moving average, the industry also grew (0.5%). In the other types of comparison, however, production fell: in relation to April 2021 (-0.5%), in the year (-3.4%) and in the 12-month period (-0.3 %).
From March to April, 16 of the 26 activities surveyed had an increase in production, with highlights for coke, petroleum products and biofuels (4.6%), beverages (5.2%) and other chemical products (2.8 %).
On the other hand, ten activities had decrease, among them food products (-4.1%) and automotive vehicles, trailers and bodies (-4.2%).
Among the four major economic categories of industry, only semi and non-durable consumer goods (2.3%) and intermediate goods, that is, industrialized inputs used in the productive sector (0.8%) rose. Capital goods – machinery and equipment – fell 9.2%, while consumer durables dropped 5.5%.
