Iberia cancels flights to Venezuela after US warning of risks in airspace

Nota empresarial Iberia

The airline Iberia decided to cancel its commercial flights to Venezuela due to the military tension that this country maintains with the United States. Iberia said it will evaluate the situation in Venezuela to decide when to resume operations.

Iberia’s decision comes just one day after The United States will warn about risks in the airspace of Maiquetía due to increased military activity, due to the “worsening security situation and increased military activity in or around Venezuela.”

The number of Iberia commercial flights to Venezuela was five weekly. Friday and Sunday were the only days that there were no scheduled flights to that country.

The US urged commercial airlines and pilots to exercise extreme caution at all altitudes, as they consider that they can “represent a potential risk to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight, arrivals or departures and with planes on the ground.”

The United States Aviation specified that since September 2025, interference has been recorded with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in the airspace controlled by Maiquetía. They assured that some civil flights reported persistent effects, even after leaving the area; which, they say, can compromise essential communication, navigation, surveillance and security systems.

They added that the interference, which is caused by jammers and GNSS signal spoofing devices, can affect aircraft up to 250 nautical miles around (just over 460 kilometers).

After Donald Trump’s administration deployed military equipment to the Caribbean to fight drug trafficking, Venezuela also began to carry out military exercises in the national territory to defend the nation from a possible attack by the United States, since they believe that North America is really seeking a regime change.

The US maintains that “although Venezuela has at no time expressed the intention of targeting civil aviation,” it has advanced combat aircraft, anti-aircraft systems and Portable Air Defense Systems, “capable of reaching the altitudes at which commercial aviation is developed.”

Plus Ultra and Air Europa continue to operate between Madrid and Caracas.
