IACHR will hold hearing for "arbitrary deprivation" of the nationality of Nicaraguans

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announced that it will hold a special hearing this coming Friday, March 10, to discuss the “arbitrary deprivation” of nationality to more than 300 Nicaraguans by order of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

This meeting will take place during the 186th session of the IACHR to be held at the University of California, Los Angeles, United States. The hearing “will aim to receive information from civil society organizations and victims of human rights violations on the measures recently adopted by the State of Nicaragua regarding the arbitrary deprivation of nationality and other violations of human rights.”

The organization reported that it will be receiving requests from organizations and victims who wish to participate in the hearing with a deadline of March 3, for which they must fill out a form presenting their identification data and the rationale for their participation.

“The IACHR will inform the list of organizations summoned to participate and invites those who wish to present in writing the documentation and information they consider relevant in relation to the subject of the hearing,” says the statement issued on March 2.

Between February 9 and 15, the Ortega y Murillo regime declared 317 people “traitors to the homeland,” of these 222 were exiled to the United States and 94 were announced in the middle of the month. Along with the outburst of Nicaraguan citizenship, he also ordered the confiscation of their assets.

The more than 300 Nicaraguans declared stateless would have been accused by the Public Ministry for the crimes of conspiracy to undermine national integrity in real competition with the crime of spreading false news through information and communication technology, all to the detriment of the State of Nicaragua and society.

Ortega reformed article 21 of the Political Constitution of the Republic to remove Nicaraguan nationality from dissident voices to his regime.
