IACHR will analyze the situation of political prisoners in Nicaragua

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), this Friday, June 24, in a public hearing, will analyze the situation of political prisoners in Nicaragua, with the aim of giving continuity to the precautionary measures granted to Nicaraguans for the organism.

The 60 prisoners of conscience who have benefited from these measures by the IACHR are opponents who were imprisoned between 2018 and 2021 for raising their voices and denouncing human rights violations by the Ortega regime.

The body’s public hearing will assess whether the State of Nicaragua has adopted the “necessary measures to protect the rights to life, personal integrity and health” of political prisoners.

The Nicaraguan Human Rights Collective Never Again detailed that of the precautionary measures granted by the IACHR to 60 people: 44 are still imprisoned, seven were released and nine are relatives (including five boys and girls).

Nicaraguan human rights organizations, within the framework of the entity’s 184th session, invite the general public to tune in to the public hearing and demand the release of all political prisoners.

Human rights defender Georgina Ruiz will participate in the hearing, on behalf of the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH). The appearance begins at 9 in the morning, this Friday, June 24.

According to him Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisonersin Nicaragua there are 190 opponents imprisoned for political reasons and judged with laws approved months before the presidential elections and branded as repressive by opponents and human rights organizations.
