Faced with the threats and violence suffered by Pascuala López López and her family by an armed group, in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz, ejido Cuxtitalli el Pinar, in Chiapas, due to their activism to defend this indigenous community and their demands of justice for the murder of his son in 2020, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued precautionary measures in order for the Mexican State to carry out the necessary actions to guarantee the life and integrity of the beneficiaries.
In its resolution, it indicated that although the State reported on the protection actions it has carried out in favor of Pascuala López and her family, as well as the entire population of the area, and expressed its best willingness to generate the necessary measures to channel the case before the competent institutions, a situation of serious risk to the rights to life and personal integrity persists
of those affected.
Consequently, the IACHR also asked it to adopt actions to guarantee the safety of the victims and prevent acts of threats, intimidation, and violence against them, considering differentiated approaches based on their gender and cultural relevance. Likewise, report on the actions carried out in order to investigate the alleged facts that gave rise to the adoption of this pronouncement and thus avoid its repetition.
In the document, the commission explained that the request for precautionary measures was filed by the National Network of Civil Human Rights Organizations All Rights for All and stated that for more than five years an armed group called Feelings of the Nation arrived at the ejido, which caused the violence to intensify. Pascuala López’s son was murdered on February 3, 2020 after he refused to join them.
Likewise, it pointed out that on April 8, Pascuala suffered an attempted murder and the attacks against him have continued even though in October of that same year, the Chiapas Attorney General’s Office detained and linked to the process the alleged leader of The scooters and responsible for the murder of the affected woman’s son.
